Supporting Immigrants Rising Through a Pivotal Transition

Helping a mission-driven organization prepare for independence with a sustainable grants management solution

Immigrants Rising empowers undocumented young people in the United States to achieve educational and career goals through personal, institutional, and policy transformation. In 2024, the organization began transitioning from being a fiscally-sponsored project of Community Initiatives to becoming an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

This transition required Immigrants Rising to build internal systems and processes that its fiscal sponsor had previously managed. One critical area of focus was inbound grant tracking, which had been handled entirely in Excel spreadsheets and now needed to be centralized, reportable, and scalable.

With a small grants team and a major organizational change underway, Immigrants Rising needed a reliable, efficient system to support grants management within Salesforce. While they were using the Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP), it had not been configured to manage grants.

01
Inbound Grant Tracking

Grants were managed outside of Salesforce, using spreadsheets with limited visibility. The team needed a way to distinguish inbound grants from other donation types and to follow each opportunity from research through reporting.

02
Historical Grant Data Import

Immigrants Rising had over 18 years of historical data representing over $48 million in grant funding. Migrating this information into Salesforce was essential for reference and analysis.

03
Organizational Readiness

To become an independent nonprofit by October 2024, the team needed their internal systems to be finalized and functioning ahead of that milestone.

04
Limited Staff Capacity

The grants team consisted of fewer than five people. The solution needed to be intuitive, accessible, and supportive of shared ownership across the team.

Fíonta worked with Immigrants Rising to configure a grants management system in Salesforce that met both immediate needs and long-term goals. The project focused on building a strong foundation within Salesforce to reduce reliance on spreadsheets and increase operational efficiency.

Configured Grants Management in Salesforce

Developed a custom process to support the full lifecycle of inbound grants, from application to award to closeout. Used a combination of standard and custom fields to capture details such as proposal type, deadlines, application websites, and reporting requirements.

Created Dashboards and Reporting Views

Designed a grants dashboard with key metrics, including awarded grants by fiscal year, open opportunities, and giving trends by foundation type. Developed two grants reports, a list view for reporting deliverables, and a homepage component showing assigned tasks and upcoming deadlines.

Built Tools to Support the Grant Lifecycle

Enabled tracking of research, application, decision status, and installment-based payments. Added functionality to monitor available funds throughout the grant period.

Imported and Cleaned Historical Data

Migrated 18 years of grant data and cleaned legacy data, correcting errors such as misplaced address fields.

With the new system in place, Immigrants Rising gained visibility into every stage of their grant pipeline. The team can now manage applications, track awards, and ensure compliance with grant requirements from a single platform.

This solution prepared the organization to transition to independent nonprofit status by establishing a strong internal structure for grants management. The tools have created a sustainable process that supports informed decision-making, reduces manual tracking, and builds capacity for future growth.
