Build an AI Roadmap! Let Us Show You How.

Dr. Lisa Rau joined the UST Education Forum to address one of the more consequential decisions associations face today: how to adopt AI in a way that is strategic, sustainable, and aligned with organizational mission.

The session opened with the foundational premise that successful AI implementation begins not with tool selection, but with an honest assessment of where AI can make a meaningful difference across the organization. Investing in that step upfront is one of the clearest predictors of a successful implementation.

The assessment is most effective when it’s collaborative. Gathering input from stakeholders across departments builds a shared understanding of where AI can reduce costs, improve the member experience, streamline time-consuming workflows, and strengthen data analytics. The goal is to identify the highest-value opportunities before any technology decisions are made.

From there, Dr. Rau walked attendees through how to translate that assessment into a structured roadmap, one that accounts for tool analysis and selection, data readiness, phased implementation, staff training, and measurable milestones that allow organizations to evaluate progress and adjust course as needed.

The session also addressed the implementation pitfalls that most commonly derail adoption efforts, and the governance practices that keep a roadmap relevant as AI continues to evolve. That ongoing governance piece is often underestimated. Associations that approach AI adoption as a sustained organizational commitment, rather than a one-time project, are better positioned to realize its long-term value.

The through line was clear: with thoughtful preparation and a collaborative plan in place, associations can move forward with AI in a way that is scalable, mission-aligned, and built to last.
